Recruitment –

Recruitment is the process of attracting the candidates that is required by the organization for a particular job role or job roles. Every successful organization, whether if it’s a company, corporation, start-up, or an entrepreneurial firm will have its own set of clearly defined employment and recruitment policies and procedures and the department that typically holds the responsibility for the recruitment and selection procedure for such organizations is the human resource (HR) department.

An organization attracts employees to an organization primarily by using two methods. One is through internal recruitment and the other is through external recruitment.

1.1.1      Internal recruitment.

Internal recruitment occurs when a job role is filled by the organization with an individual within the organization. If a position is available in an organization, management can make the information available through methods such as departmental meetings or through individual discussions with employees eligible to such positions etc. Internal recruitment methods used by an organization are,

1.     Promotions

2.     Transfers

3.     Employee referrals etc.

Advantages of recruiting employees internally are as follows.

1.     It costs less to recruit employees.

2.     The recruitment process can be shorter in this process.

3.     Employee motivation will increase when positions are available to employees with the company.

4.     Additional costs in training new employees or the time taken for the new employee to get used to the organization will be reduced.

5.     Employees within the organization are already familiar with the individual promoted.

6.     Company management are already familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the internally recruited individual.

Disadvantages for internal recruitment can be,

1.     Limited number of potential applicants.

2.     The risk of no new ideas flowing to the organization externally.

3.     Employee competition and conflicts could arise due to applying for the same position (Tutor2u Limited, 2021).

1.1.2      External recruitment.

External recruitment occurs when organization recruits’ employees from outside the organization in fill the required job role of the organization. Employers and management can use various methods to attract employee externally to an organization. One example would be advertisements such as newspaper advertisement and carrier fairs. Social media and posts in websites are another method used in today’s era due to the advancement of technology. Referrals is another great way to find talented individuals externally to the organization (Top Echelon Blog, 2021).

Advantages of external recruitment are as follows.

1.     New blood will flow into the company and as a result new information and ideas wil flow to the organization.

2.     Large number of talented potential applicants can be found.

3.     People will have a wider range of experience.

Disadvantages for external recruitment are,

1.     The recruitment process will be much larger as the most suitable individual from a large pool of applicants must be selected.

2.     The costs incurred will be much larger than internal recruitment.

3.     It will take some time for the new employee to get familiar with the new organization and its employees

4.     If the selection process is not well defined, the most suitable candidate cannot be found (Tutor2u Limited, 2021).

Selection –

Selection is the process of selecting the most suitable person to the organization from the recruitment options available to the organization. The primary method an organization does a selection process is through interviews. Walk-in interviews, or face to face interviews are forms of interviewing an organization can hold in selecting the most suitable candidate from the recruitment options available. Tests are another form of selection in which organization gives a test to the individual to see the knowledge and compatibility with the job role as well as aptitude tests. This form of selection method is essential in industries which require knowledge bases workers such as the banking industry.

The recruitment and selection are a long process that might take weeks or months, and this can be frustrating for potential candidates. Although the procedure can be lengthy, it ensures that the best candidate gets hired. Many businesses value this since acquiring and training new personnel can be costly to an organization and while recruiting the correct individual can be a valuable asset to any organization, the recruitment of the wrong the individual can end up being a liability to the organization.
