The enthusiasm, energy level, commitment, and the amount of creativity that an employee brings to the organization on a daily basis can be defined as employee motivation (QuestionPro, 2022). Therefore, high level of employee motivation is better for the increase of organization productivity as well as increasing the employee engagement as well in doing tasks. As a result, it can be seen that employee motivation is a key factor an organization leaders and its managers try to accomplish. Another benefit of employee motivation is the reduction of employee turnover rate as employees are motivated to work in the same organization.

1.1 Importance of employee motivation.

Motivation plays a critical role in a person’s life be it for the personal improvement of an individual or for the improvement of the organizational performance. Employees who are motivated don't need to be instructed on how to accomplish their jobs; they take initiative, are keen to take on new duties, are creative, and are go-getters (QuestionPro, 2022).

1.2 Types of employee motivation

There are mainly two forms of employee motivation. One is intrinsic motivation while the other is extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation can be defined as motivation that come from within the employee.

Extrinsic motivation is when employees are motivated by external factors. External factors for employee motivation can be rewards and recognition (QuestionPro, 2022)

For organizations which are primarily transactional leadership oriented, the primary mode of employee motivation is trough extrinsic motivation, which is through rewards and recognition. An example of an intrinsic motivation is the empowerment of organizational employees.

1.3 Empowerment

The process of giving individuals in an company the power, authority, responsibility, resources, and ability to make decisions and solve work-related problems can be defined as empowerment (Aparna, 2022).

Employee empowerment can be viewed as a form of intrinsic motivation. Examples for intrinsic motivation such as empowerment are,

Motivation to employees by holding various motivational meetings or events. These motivational events can consist of both employee motivation which helps employees be motivated in doing work and also motivational meetings on personal growth and other aspects of the employees’ life. Taking suggestions of employees when making decisions are another form of empowerment for employees as it helps the employees feel involved in the decision-making process of the organization as well as for employees to be more involved in the organizational activities.

A yearly trip can be organized by the management and the employees every year in order to have the employees work stress reduced and to build a team bond during these trips by doing various activities and games during the outing. During these trips, employees of the organization can bond with each other communicate with everyone in a non-organizational setting and as well as individuals who do not communicate lot during the organizational hours due to various job positions or departments, can form a bond as well. The leaders of the organization can also take part in the trip and the gap between the management and employees can be reduced by this.

1.4 Rewards & recognitions

The acknowledgment of an organization’s employees for their exceptional performance can be defined as employee recognition. The reinforcement of particular behaviors, practices, or activities that produce greater performance and positive organizational results is the objective of employee recognition in a workplace. Employee recognition will result in employees having a better self-esteem as well as be regarded in a better view by their peers (Andriotis, 2018).

A system in which employees are recognized for their performance in intrinsic or extrinsic ways can be defined as rewards and recognition. Therefore, extrinsic rewards given to employee can be defined as rewards for employees while recognition can be views as an intrinsic motivation. Appropriate and regular financial compensation, employee or team celebrations through meetings or award ceremonies, recognition of years served, and milestones or targets achieved by employees can be some ways an organization recognizes and rewards its employees (Darwinbox Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd, 2022)

1.5 Training and development

The educational activities within an organization designed to increase the knowledge and skills of employees while providing information and instruction on how to better perform specific tasks can be defined as training and development (Darwinbox Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd, 2022). In other words, training and development is a form of developing the human resource of the organization. This is done in order to generate a competent and qualified work force within the organization. There are primarily two forms an organization can train its employees. One is on the job training and the other is off the job training.

On the job training, as the name suggest is a form of training given to employees while working on the job during the day-to-day operations. Therefore, on the job training is usually provided within the workplace itself while off the job training is usually done at separate location other than the job site. Off the job training can be given to individuals of the organization in the form of courses or workshops etc.

  3. Maslow's theory states that a person is motivated according to the level of his needs, and he will progress depending on how well these needs are addressed at each position. A person in the basic/entry-level may require or look for security, social needs, psychological needs, and favorable working conditions. But over the hierarchy in the organization, HR should know how to motivate each person.
